Delay Compositions

Tungsten Delay
MIL-T-23132

Chemical: A homogenous mixture of tungsten metal powder, barium chromate, potassium perchlorate, and diatomaceous earth (superfloss), blended to meet MIL-T-23132. Low gas volume production.

Burning Rate: 0.15 sec/inch to 42 sec/inch with coefficient of variations listed:

sec/inchcoefficient
.15 – 1 .107%
1 – 55%
5 – 204%
20 – 423%

Environment: Non-hygroscopic qualified at +76º and 65ºF (+24º and – 54ºC)

Application: Suitable for dry loading into ordnance devices for use as a controlled time delay in an explosive or pyrotechnic train. Used for controlled time functioning of cartridge-actuated devices in aircraft, rockets, missiles, fuzes and other precision-timing applications.

Safety: Minimal hazard in loading and assembly operations.

Shipping Classification: Flammable solid, NOS

Zirconium/Nickel Delay
MIL-C-13739

Chemical: A homogenous mixture of zirconium nickel alloys, barium chromate and potassium perchlorate, blended to meet MIL-C-13739.

Burning Rate:

  • Type I: 2 sec/inch
  • Type II: 5 sec/inch
  • Type III: 12 sec/inch
  • With flame sustainer: 8 to 25 sec/inch.

Environment: Qualified at 70ºF (21ºC)

Application: Primarily used in delay elements of hand grenade fuzes.

Safety: Minimal hazard in loading and assembly operations.

Shipping Classification: Flammable solid, NOS

Boron/Barium Chromate

Chemical: A homogenous mixture of boron powder and barium chromate that can be produced in powder or free-flowing granular form.

Sensitivity: Less sensitive to static electricity and impact than zirconium based ignition compositions. Does not possess the slagging characteristics of A-1A.

Application: Delay ignition material for detonators, gas generators and other devices. It is also used as a highly consistent and reliable delay composition within the 0.5 to 5.0 second burning range.

Shipping Classification: Flammable solid, NOS

Ignition Compositions

BKNO3

Pellets and powders per specification MIL-P-46994B. PSI makes BKNO3 without binder. This material is commonly referred to as 2C granules. PSI processes the material to various sieve fractions. The most common cuts are 20/40, 20/50 and 50/100.

Boron TBK ( Part A & B)

Fuel – Boron and Dichromated Titanium
Oxidizer – Barium Chromate and Potassium Perchlorate

A-1A Gasless Ignition Powder
MIL-P-22264

Chemical: A homogenous mixture of zirconium powder, ferric oxide, and diatomaceous earth (super floss). Non-gaseous

Sensitivity: Extremely sensitive to static electricity and easily ignited by friction or impact.

Application: Used extensively as the initiating charge in many pyrotechnic delay trains. F-33B variation, as included in MIL-P- 22264 dated 28 Jan. 60 is available.

Shipping Classification: Explosive 1.3 (Packaged wet)
